Opus One is the realized dream of two men: Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux and Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi. Together, our founders set out to create a single wine dedicated to the pursuit of uncompromising quality. This singular mission shapes every vintage, today and for generations to come.

The "Opus One" is the result of a careful selection of the best Cabernet Sauvignon bunches, which are combined with small percentages of other varieties of Bordeaux origin. It matures in new oak barrels for about 17 months. The result is a red wine of incredible depth and elegance. Long and enveloping, it probably represents the best that California wine has been able to express for decades.

TECHNICAL DATA
Alcohol 14%

APPEARANCE
Dark ruby red.

NOSE
The Opus One 2021 effuses seductive, dark fruit aromas of crushed cassis, blackberry, and black cherry with subtle hints of violet, vanilla, and baking spices.

PALATE
Bright and fresh on the attack, concentrated flavors mirror the aromas and are coupled with an exceptionally plush, creamy texture in the mid-palate from the fine-grained tannins. Poignant notes of black tea, licorice, and chocolate lead to a long lingering finish.

PAIRING
This bold wine makes a great pairing for steaks, barbeque and full-flavoured cheeses.

AGEING
In new oak barrels for about 17 months.

PAIRING
Throughout the meal, Opus One is a wine that goes well with large meat dishes, perhaps enhanced with a sprinkling of fine black truffle.

The year was 1924. It was the heart of the Prohibition Era and wine’s darkest hour when it was outlawed and deemed unconstitutional. It was also the year the Delicato family first planted vineyards in California and farmed grapes that were sold to friends and neighbors.

Crafted with rich, dark fruit aged in Premium Whiskey Barrels, the grapes for the Whiskey Barrel-aged French Blend were picked at optimal ripeness based on winemaker evaluation, vineyard condition and an eye on weather. The fruit is harvested in the cool of the night and delivered to the winery to be destemmed into fermentation tanks. Once the wine is made, a portion is aged in Whiskey barrels, imparting classically smooth vanilla, toasty oak notes to the structured blend.

Chappellet is recognized as one of the great Napa Valley wineries, and one of the few which remains family owned. Today, the second generation is committed to continuing the vision of their parents, Donn and Molly Chappellet. Together, the siblings are dedicated to maintaining sustainable farming techniques, a relentless focus on wine quality, respect for Pritchard Hill’s natural beauty and the preservation of family ownership for generations to come.

The most sought-after wine in the portfolio, this limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon represents the pinnacle of Chappellet winemaking and embodies the elegant power and complexity of Pritchard Hill winegrowing. Like the great Bordeaux wines that first inspired Donn Chappellet, this wine is crafted by blending Cabernet Sauvignon with other classic Bordeaux varietals. The wine was aged for 22 months in 100 percent new French oak. Grown on rocky, mountainside vineyard, these Cabernets have consistently displayed an ability to age for several decades.

Together, the siblings are dedicated to maintaining sustainable farming techniques, a relentless focus on wine quality, respect for Pritchard Hill’s natural beauty and the preservation of family ownership for generations to come.

The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon has been a foundational wine in Chappellet Winery portfolio for more than five decades. It is a benchmark for the long-lived hillside wines of the Napa Valley; full of structure and aging potential, yet seductively forward in its concentrated varietal character. The dry, rocky soils of Pritchard Hill produce small, intensely flavorful grapes. Crop thinning allows for full, even ripening and elevates flavor complexity.

Gnarly Head wines began with a vision and a vine. In 2004, on a mission to make a serious Zinfandel, winemakers journeyed to Lodi in central California in search of the famed old vine Zinfandel vineyards. Grown in the head-trained, spur-pruned method for over a century, these vigorous gnarled vines produced more ripened red fruit than they had ever seen. They took it as a challenge to create the biggest, boldest Zinfandel they had ever made. The result was authentic, structured wines with a hint of something unexpected. Something Gnarly.

Channeling Gnarly Head’s signature fruit-driven style with concentrated black fruit flavors, Authentic Black is a dark, inky Petite Sirah-based blend designed to stand up to the season’s heartiest dishes. Fruit for this new, limited time only offering was sourced from Lodi, California with choice lots aged on oak for 12 months to craft a smooth, rich blend.

They took it as a challenge to create the biggest, boldest Zinfandel they had ever made. The result was authentic, structured wines with a hint of something unexpected. Something Gnarly.

Gnarly Head Pinot Noir takes “the heartbreak grape” for a walk on the wild side. Grapes for this powerful pinot came from California growing regions notorious for growing great Pinot Noir: Monterey, Lodi and the North Coast. Fruit from each area brought a different layer to the overall blend. Vineyards in the Lodi region—a little-known source of fruit for many sparkling wine houses—provided the bold backbone for Gnarly Head Pinot Noir. North Coast fruit brought a wild element of smoky, savory aromas and flavors, while the Monterey fruit added a pure, ripe Bing cherry characteristic made famous by the region.

This Zinfandel is a bold wine grown from some of the oldest vines in California. Older vines produce fewer grape clusters, but the small berries yield intense, dark fruit flavors.
