In the late 1990s, the Bolfo family decided to breathe new life into the ruins of an old convent located in the charming countryside of Pievasciata, a picturesque village in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga (Siena). And it was from the vineyards of this monastery, lovingly and carefully transformed into the prestigious 5-star Hotel Le Fontanelle, that the story of Vallepicciola began.

An elegant bottle, with a fresh and refined sip, which outlines the unmistakable character of the Chianti Classico area.

Rocca delle Macìe was established in 1973, when Italo Zingarelli, a film-maker, producer and director, decided to realize his lifelong dream by acquiring the “Le Macìe” estate, in order to create a winery in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone and to produce wines that, thanks to their balance between the tannic structure, fruit and pleasantness, can be appreciated by young people and wines that are able to give over the years a great evolution.

It’s a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2019, made from Sangiovese grapes grown on the first two estates Italo purchased in 1973, Le Macìe and Sant’Alfonso. A blend, therefore, of two very different terroirs: the former rich in Alberese, the latter in clay – as different from one another in character as the two protagonists in the film, Bud & Terence, one strong, the other light. The choice of the Magnum format reflects Italo’s philosophy – being together, sharing carefree moments together over a glass of wine.

Italo’s children, Fabio, Sandra and Sergio, dedicate to their father a limited-edition Magnum of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, the apex of the estate’s production, donning a label in tribute to “They Call Me Trinity”. This special magnum represents the completion of a journey begun 50 years ago, when Italo (Roman by birth) fell deeply in love with the hills of Castellina in Chianti.

The highest expression of Rocca delle Macìe winemaking, the Gran Selezione Sergio Zingarelli has a history that stretches way back, since it is the fruit of many years’ work in the vineyards on the Le Macìe estate at Castellina in Chianti, where the Sangiovese grape comes into its own like nowhere else. This wine encapsulates the very best of the Chianti Classico production zone and its vineyards, as well as the painstaking efforts of everyone involved.

The first bottling was in 2010, with the 2019 harvest, we are on the 10th year of production of this new category in the Chianti region.

The winery’s historic cru, it already had all the characteristic of the Gran Selezione before the new category was born. It is made using grapes grown on the vineyard of the same name in Fizzano, which extends across 35 hectares of sandy, pebbly soils that are perfect for exalting the fragrances of the Sangiovese grape. Arriving at the Tenuta Fizzano estate and finding yourself in front of 35 hectares of highly specialized vineyards with an enviable south-westerly exposure, featuring highly ordered rows that work their way across sinuous hillsides, it is easy to understand why ‘Chiantishire’ is renowned the world over.
